Kathy Sager is an Early Childhood Educator and published children’s author. She operates a child care centre out of her home in British Columbia’s unique Inland Temperate Rainforest (Caribou Rainforest). Kathy has fallen in love with the mountain caribou and believes it is important to leave the old-growth trees standing in the rainforest where they live. The story of Mother Reindeer reminds her of how thankful she is for the abundance of nature all around her. In sharing this story with her daughters, she has found a beautiful way to honour the return of the sun on the winter solstice. Kristen Scholfield-Sweet, a visual artist, with a PHD in Art Education, made these illustrations by using an unusual technique of layering chalk pastel over acrylic paint. Time spent with her chosen granddaughter, Zyla Mae, better known as “the bug,” gave her an idea about how to create more than one story in the same picture. A reindeer journeys to the sun, and a little bug goes along. She is honoured to contribute her paintings to the protection and sustainability of her other-than-human family. Kristen acknowledges that she lives and works in the traditional territory of the Klahoose, Tla'amin and Xwe'malhkwu (Homalco) First Nations. She is grateful for their ongoing presence on this land.
